There is much discussion amongst IT professionals about the best ways to ensure application performance on WANs (Wide Area Networks) and the many vendors and solutions that exist to achieve this end.  In this post, the focus will be on the relatively new solution known as Adaptive Private Networking, and how this technique complements existing solutions currently provided by WAN Optimization, Virtual Desktop and WAFS/caching vendors.

APN (Adaptive Private Networking) utilizes many techniques currently covered by existing solutions, such as bandwidth management for outbound traffic and TCP termination to address the bandwidth-delay product issue.  However, there are many additional areas in which APN has innovative solutions that go beyond the status quo.  The biggest innovation is that APN utilizes Resilient Multipath Connectivity which delivers predictable and reliable performance by enabling link aggregation of diverse IP WAN connections.  This is achieved by using inexpensive broadband internet connections to augment and replace far more expensive connections like MPLS.

Essentially APN creates blended WANs using inexpensive broadband internet connections whenever possible, but also tapping into limited MPLS networks in order to ensure network reliability.
