When meeting up with a client who requires a new web design and you are about to start the process of extracting information about what they like and/or dislike there are a few handy tips you can follow. You cannot just go into a meeting unprepared and expect to get a complete design brief from a client without any template questions that you generally ask or have something in mind that you ask other clients who are also getting a new website designed. A thorough brief should be undertaken at all levels and all information should be documented in case it is needed at a later stage or if the job does proceed and you do need to refer to your briefing notes

  • What’s the budget?
  • Any specific website Design Requirements?
  • A clear outline of what the client expects in terms of design
  • An outline of who the target market is.
  • Is there a strict deadline?
  • Images. Are they client supplied or should they be purchased
  • Any other collateral that can be used as a reference?

And once the site is about to launch, there are some recommendations in place just in case…

  • Is the site load time ‘reasonable? Do you have to wait for an eternity for the site to load?
  • How is the contrast between text and background colour? Is it friendly for the elderly?
  • Is there a clear path to important sections such as ‘contact’ and ‘company info’? It has to be very user friendly.
  • Is the main navigation easily identifiable – you have to be able to find the navigation buttons that will guide you throughout the site.
