*nix users, also get it through your head that not everybody cares about “hacker power spirit” or that they like to browse through 50 different programs that do the same thing (where only 1 or 2 of the programs work). The average user doesn’t give a crap about or care for typing long commands into a terminal, having to memorize them, just to install something, unzip, or compile. Sally the ditzy cheerleader and Jim the jock don’t care about hacking.
Just like RMS, I can also redefine or add to the meaning of freedom and convince others of its “truth” just like cult leaders can redefine who Jesus is and convince their followers that they are Jesus. I find it strange he gets pissed off that just because he couldn’t modify code that he didn’t write, he decides he’ll redefine/add to the definition of freedom and place it on the same level of real freedom and human rights issues.
He’s my favorite aspie.
Is he drumming on his laptop? wtf stallman? That’s where the hard drive is! Stop it!
crazy man on the loose!
Zzzzz.
this is the most awkward thing ive ever watched in my life
FREAK
@saquerum
X.org works without GNU software.
@YetAnotherBadYT
Consider Android. Which uses the linux kernel but not the gnu userland. Its almost a completely different operating system and your other software like x.org doesn’t run without gnu utilities, but you can install the freebsd kernel or solaris kernel with gnu utilities and have your software work.
@Exdozolie
Well, it includes GPL’d stuff in /usr/ports and it uses GCC, so it seems like they do.
The majority of programs are from the original BSD, but they still use a lot of GNU programs.
@YetAnotherBadYT No.
At least I think so, because the GNU stuff is GPL’d and the FreeBSD stuff is BSD’d.
@mikepep33 maximum brofist
@awarddd suck my dick
I don’t get the GNU/Linux thing.
If you want to credit people, that’s great, but my Linux system also runs X.org, Firefox and a multitude of other software. Should I refer to it as GNU/X.org/GNOME/Mozilla/Linux?
And why not call FreeBSD GNU/FreeBSD because FreeBSD uses GNU utilities, right?
Silly richard.
Peace!
@loniousmonk Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
@loniousmonk There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system.
