Want to learn how to program a microprocessor?? In This tutorial we will discuss what hardware we need to program a PIC and the software that goes with it. We are using a PIC16F84A for the microprocessor… MPLAB for the programming environment… and Assembly language as the actual language we will program in…

Also for anyone who’s interested, you can get USB ICD 2 clone programmer on eBay for around $30-35…

Watching to brush up on assembly, good start hope it gets to assembly. I used the pic kit 2 in school and it worked awesome. I am buying my self one next week. In school the teacher made his own ‘i/o drivers’ with assembly and let us call them as c functions. what a jip but it made the class easier but didnt teach a thing about assembly.

Yeah microchip are great :) their stuff just works… I would be surprised if you had any problems… in the end all PIC programmers do the same thing…. put binary code on the PIC

I havent used them before but it looks like it should work fine :) they are just a board with everything on them so you dont have to do the hardware yourself…. the basics of the PIC and the code used still apply to it

it is safer to use the software that comes with specific programmer…. melab will output the code on to any one of the serial, printer or USB ports… and most programmers use very similar signals from the computer to program the pic…. but I cant guarantee that any other programmer will work with melabs apart from the ones they make…..because Im not sure how compatible melab is with other programmers… sory :P

I think I am going to try the PicKit 2 (from microchip) since it is only $35. I’m very new to this though, is there anything I should watch out for when buying this programmer?
